"The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me"

How is education save's ones life? Education is an essential component of life. It is a self-enlightening process that brings about an awareness of the world around us. It develops our perspective of gaining knowledge, which opens up limitless opportunities improving the acdemic aspects of life. While some say that education merely points out the process of gaining information about the world we live in, some say that the procurement of knowledge is mainly caused by having the right education. So why is education so important? The answer is simply because it covers valuable life lessons and more.  Alexie thought education was very important to every child that he could reach out too.   Alexie was able to educate himself and not letting the stereotype keep him from reaching his full potential he was about to become a writer and teacher and better his life. He was able to get away from unemployment that was common in his community and everywhere else.

How was Alexie able to save one's life of the students he works with?  Alexie knew he had to help the poor Indian children learn to read.  He saw that there was a lot of resources like the internet, newspapers, comic books and novels.  All of those things require the skill of reading.

Education was a big part of Alexie life.  He saw that this was to important to everyone that he came across especially his students.  Alexie is trying to give this to children to help them grow as people and to survive in the world. He wants to give them the joy of reading and writing and give them a chance to do something more with their life then they would be doing without education, so in a sense this is how and why he is trying to save them.

  1. Hi Francesca,

Your post reminds me that education serves multiple purposes and teaches multiple lessons. We usually think only of the instruction or topics covered in school, namely history, math, language arts, etc. but hidden curriculums are at work as well. Students learn how to interact with others, take directions and criticism, sit in a seat for stretches at a time, listen, take notes, how to perceive others, worldviews, etc. We don't often think about these other lessons. Alexie is successful because he is able to excel in both the formal aspects of schooling and the unstated aspects too. His love of reading and writing helped, but he also needed "luck," "arrogance," and an attitude/personality that didn't mind being an outcast.

    Thanks for your ideas.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  2. Francesca,

Education certainly gives anyone a huge advantage in life. A lot of kids don't like going to school and that's understandable. I think that if education was approached in a different manner, maybe it'd be enjoyable to students. It's not a matter of whether education is important or not, it is important!

Like you said, education brings awareness. Without it, we'd be in the dark about so many things. For example, science is such a neat thing because it explains so much of how our body works and how other living organisms operate. It permits us to really appreciate nature and our self. This is one of many advantages of learning about new things. Alexie knew this and he wanted to help out others discover how beneficial it is to read and write and to just be able to have access to information.

  4. Good education opens a lot of opportunities. It can be important to get as much education that you possibly can because if you don't do so later in life you might regret it. Reading is very crucial because it helps with everything in life. From going to the store and picking up certain ingredients to driving to a specific location. It's everywhere in are day to day life.
