"The Insufficiency of Honesty"

What is Carter's definition of integrity?

Carter refers to it like the weather everybody talks about it but nobody knows what to do about it.  He has many definitions to Intergrity.  They come in three steps.

            1.  The first criterio captures the idea that integrity requires a degree of moral reflectiveness.
            2.  The second brings in the ideal of a person of integrity as steadfast, a quality that includes keeping  one's commitments.
            3.  The third remind us that a person of integrity can be trusted.

What does it mean?
Integrity means a steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code.  A also think keeping your integrity would be keeping your good name or maintaing your character.

I do believe what Carter says about intergrity.  Its all up to the individual if he/she has intergrity or can be honest to oneself.  I think it's all how you were raise with morals.

  1. Hi Francesca,

Carter writes, "When I refer to integrity, I have something very specific in mind. Integrity, as I will use the term, requires three steps: discerning what is right and wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at a person cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong."

This is what he had in mind when he's explaining the three points you raise.

What's interesting about Carter's definition is his focus on action and reflection. I think a lot of people perceive themselves as having integrity, but as Carter points out, having integrity means you've discerned right from wrong and you publicly act on that discernment.

Your post reminds me that we are taught to value integrity, but very few of us know what "integrity" means and how to practice it in our lives.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  2. I thought it was a really good definition the author gave for integrity. And as I see it, most people can think or pretend or even look to have integrity but often don't. It's sort of like how they say, it depends on how you act when no one is looking. If you're as honest even when no one knows or isn't paying attention, I believe that's a trait of true integrity. And I also agree with the fact that not a lot of people have it these days and sometimes it takes years to build, maybe from experiences or just learning more and more how to become a better person as you get older.

  3. I agree with the definitely that carter gave for integrity. The sad thing is though that most people no a days do not have the slightest clue with integrity or honesty even mean. We go about our days living them out to what we see as a normal bases. But what would change if we actually put integrity or honestly into that loop. I agree with your statement that says its up to the individual to have integrity/ honesty for themselves, because in reality we are the ones who choose how we act everyday.
