"English 100; College Reading and Writing"

What is a freewrite?  To me it is a simple process that is the basis for other discovery techniques.   Here are some guidelines:
  • Write nonstop for a set period of time (10-20 minutes).
  • Do not make corrections as you write
  • Keep writing, even if you have to write something like, "I don't know what to write."
  • Do not judge or censor what you are writing.
How is it meant to facilitate stronger writing?  I think by freewriting  has the advantage of permitting more editing.  The main thing about freewriting is that it is noneditiing.  It is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page.  Practiced reqularly, it undoes the ingrained habit of editing at the same time you are trying to produce.

No I did not find surprising or illuminating about the reading.

  1. Hi Francesca,

You must be a good writer, because the word simple when it comes to writing does not enter my vocabulary. I'm hoping that I will learn some techniques along the way. One of the things I like about free writing is that you don't have to look back, no editing. You have the freedom to just let your thoughts come out on paper and later you get to see how far you came. I too learned that this process helps you to break the habit of trying to edit at the same time that you are writing. In fact I cannot tell you how many times I did that just writing this small note to you. One of the things that I found surprising about this free writing exercise was that she states that you need to keep writing, don’t stop even if you write the same sentence or word over and over again. Keep up the good work, talk with you soon Stacy.

  2. Hello, Wow, You sure cut to the point. I Can see that you are very good at what you do. I do also think free writing is simple. Cut to the point is very important. Free writing is writing nonstop and non editing. It's amazing that there is such a way to write, being allowed. I didn't believe free writing was so easy! I didn't know you could just write without making it perfect. It's funny that free writing is messy and unorganized, but that what makes it interesting to read. I like how you kept it straight and simple..!
